- Q: How does it work?
- A: It's easy! Simply bring your old batteries in-store and deposit them in the collection unit at the front entrance of our Makita Factory Service Centres. Our recycling partner Phoenix Recycling Group will then manage the collection and recycling process.
- Q: Where do I take them?
- A: Simply bring your old batteries in-store and deposit them in the collection unit at the front entrance of our Makita Factory Service Centres.
- Q: Are there any special precautions I need to take?
- It's recommended that batteries are taped before placing them in collection units, as used batteries may still contain residual charge that can create a spark, which can be a fire hazard. All you need to do is cover exposed battery terminals or the top and bottom face of button cell batteries with clear sticky tape, non-conductive electrical tape, or duct tape. Please keep the battery label information visible if you're not using clear tape for sorting purposes.
- Q: What kind of batteries can be recycled
- A: Our battery recycling units are designed to accept Makita rechargeable batteries under 5kgs, such as: Makita 18V, 40V, 64V, 12V, 14.4V, 10.8V power tool batteries. We cannot accept lead acid batteries, car batteries, products with embedded batteries or other batteries that do not fit into the battery collection unit slot.
- NOTE: Contamination from unrecyclable battery types or other forms of waste in our recycling unit can be a hazard for our team and customers. Please ask our team if you're unsure whether your batteries can be accepted.
- Q: Why shouldn’t I put batteries in my rubbish or recycling bin?
- A: When batteries or E-Waste items end up landfill, there is a risk that harmful substances leach into the surrounding environment. By recycling your old or unwanted batteries, you can be sure that any hazardous substances are being processed safely.
- Q: Are batteries dangerous and can they start fires?
- A: Lithium-ion batteries power many kinds of power tools and everyday devices. Like any product, a small number of these batteries can be defective. They can overheat, catch fire, or explode. It is therefore important that lithium-ion batteries are not put in your curb side rubbish or recycling, and are responsibly recycled via centres such as Makita Factory Service Centres.
- Q: How much will battery recycling cost me?
- A: Drop off for Makita batteries under 5kgs is absolutely free.
We have a drop-off stations located in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
